The magazines CA:
Contemporary Architecture (Современная архитектура, 1927-1931) and
SA: Soviet Architecture (Советская архитектура) were the official publications of the Section of Social Settlement and Housing and Utility Construction of the Soviet Union. The highly innovative CA (
Современная архитектура, 1927-1931) expressed the
avant garde movements of the 1920s that focused on the projects and theoretical anxieties of Moscow-based architects like Leonidov, and Moisei Ginzburg who functioned as the editor-in-chief. The dissolution of regional organizations of architects in favour of Union-wide ones meant that the magazine needed restructuring as well. This led to the introduction of Soviet Architecture (Советская архитектура) which was itself replaced
by the more standard review Architecture USSR (
Архитектура СССР, 1933-1992). These magazines, can be seen as a bridge between the explosive creative output of the early Soviet architects and the gradual restructuring of their output towards urban, industrial, and mass scale projects, instead of formal innovation.
