This experimental publication of Time Inc. was published as an insert in “Architectural Forum”, with an impresive list of editors in its masthead: the famous skyscraper designers William Lescaze, and Wallace K. Harrison, the MoMA art curator James Johnson Sweeney, and the promising figures of William Muschenheim and Stamo Papadaki. However, under the backlash from the US audience the magazine only survived for three issues. It remains a unique attempt for a purely modernist periodical in national circulation.

The groundbreaking magazine that kickstarted the modernist movement in the Netherlands and brought its members to international fame. Led by artist/architect Theo van Doesburg, the De Stijl group included among others the painter Piet Mondrian, the architects Jan Wils, J. J. P. Oud, and Gerrit Rietveld, and artists such as Bart van der Leck, and Vilmos Huszar.

L’ Esprit Nouveau

L’ Esprit Nouveau, launched by Le Corbusier, Ozenfant, and Dermée, sought to encompass the spirit of modernism in the Parisian setting, and established a central node in the modernist European setting, similar to the Dutch De Stijl, the German Bauhaus, and the Russian Vkhutemas. Published between 1920 and 1925 its range of subjects varied from architecture to poetry, scientiffic discoveries, and cultural debates.

Arkkitehti or the Finnish Architectural Review was originally started as an insert to the Tekniska Föreningen [The Engineering Society of Finland] and begun its independent life in 1921 as a bi-monthly, and then a monthly periodical. Through its pages marched seminal figures of Scandinavian modernism like Alvaar Aalto, Aino Aalto, and Viljo Revell.

The magazine Architektoniki (Architecture), under the direction of Antonis Kitsikis and the editorial supervision of Konstantinos Kitsikis and Doris Makris, was the first attempt in Greece to create a modern professional magazine up to international and European standards. Characteristically, articles were published in four languages: Greek, English, French, and German.

The magazine Deltio Syllogou Architectonon before being renamed to Architectones, was the official communication outlet of Greece’s Association of Qualified Architects and featured a unique combination of theoretical discussion of intense public focus, as well as policy regulations and debates about said policies. Through the decades, the content of the magazine mirrored architects’ sense of obligation and responsibility towards social, environmental, and even political issues.

Kritisk Revy

The Danish Critical Review published between the years 1927-1928, attempted to be the expressive outlet of left-wing thought as expressed in architecture and design. Being heavily text-based, the magazine related architecture to socio-political, cultural change, and even topics of sexual liberation. Headed by the disruptive architect and critic Poul Henningsen (1894-1967), the magazine emphasized the relationship between architecture and societal problems, engaging into polemic criticism against cultural conservatism and opening the way for Scandinavian avant-garde functionalism.

Zodiac

Introduced firstly in 1957 under the editorship of Bruno Alfieri, and the auspices the Belgian ADAC and Italian Olivetti Company, Zodiac set high ambitions for the extemporization of an architectural discourse as a “supernational contribution” (Zodiac, 1957). Published twice per year in Italian, French, German, and English with an international editorial commitee the magazine focused on an equal pairing of strong theoretical pieces, with architectural reporting and lasted up to 1973. The second iteration of the magazine followed in 1988 till 1999 with an additional run of 21 volumes.

Wendingen

Wendingen was directed by the legendary publisher Hendricus Theodorus Wijdeveld carried Dutch and European architecture, from its Art Nouveau and Proto-modernist roots to the celebrated modernist dynamism of the 1930s. Throughout its history, the magazine maintained a format resembling an architectural portfolio as well as a somewhat strict targeting of architects through its advertising. On the other hand, it didn’t hesitate to diversify its content, with multiple issues being devoted to specialized matters of artistic creation.

Das Neue Frankfurt

The magazine "Das Neue Frankfurt" was tasked with promoting to the wider public the new forms of building, living, and cultural life under development in the city of Frankfurt of the inter-war period. The design of the magazine contributed to its public appeal with bold lines and vivid collages. Under the direction of Ernst May, the "New Frankfurt" was the first comprehensive urban development and social program of its kind , with mass housing at its core, popularizing among other things the Frankfurt kichen of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky.

Majallat al-'Imarah (also titled Emara, Alemara Alefoun) was an Egyptian periodical that circulated between 1939-1950. Largely the project of editor Sayyid Karim, Majallat al-Imarah presented contemporary architecture in pre-war and post-war Cairo.

G: Material zur elementaren Gestaltung (Materials for Elementary Construction) was a magazine published between 1923 and 1926 by a circle of constructivist artists –mainly from Germany, and led by the Dada artist Hans Richter. Five issues were produced, with El Lissitzky and Werner Graeff supporting him on the editorial board for the first issue. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Frederick John Kiesler joined the board on subsequent issues.

De 8 en Opbouw

Formed through the collaboration of two Dutch groups of architects out of Amsterdam and Rotterdam respectively, De 8 en Opbouw was a magazine that oscilated between the mature criticism of the montly reviews, and the day-to-day reporting of construction newspapers. Published as a bi-weekly between 1932 and 1943, the magazine showcased the bold character of Dutch modernism, as well as the social changes that it expressed. From its graphic design, to the confident functionalism of the designs of Dutch architects (Duiker, Brinkman, van der Vlugt, Stam, Oud etc), the magazine’s impact has left a mark in the cultural production of Dutch architects to this day.

Technodomika

Aspiring to cover a more specialized field than general reviews of architecture, Technodomika targeted large and complex projects of architectura or infrastructure to introduce them to the Greek audience. This content however did not obstruct the editors from deviating to new artistic or national contexts, once the occassions struck. Characteristically, the magazine doned the subtitle “Architecture and technology of big constructions” in 1973, that was later on changed to “Architecture in Greece and the World”.

Hoping to represent the “Generation of 1930s” for Arts and Architecture, the group of Paris-educated team was brought together in Athens, Greece by Michalis Tombros with the mission of introducing modernism and fight what they perceived as restricting academicism. It’s contribution to architecture was significant, with its first issue urgently put together to cover the CIAM IV meeting in Athens and publishing articles of Le Corbusier, Siegfried Giedion, Alberto Sartoris, Christian Zervos etc. and the work of pionnering Greek modernists like Karantinos, Kalyvas, and Stamo Papadaki.

trans/formation: arts, communication, environment was published by abstract artist and patron Harry Hotlzman as an interdisciplinary world review that put avant garde modernism in the US forefront. Its list of collaborators featured established figures from Europe such as Le Corbusier and Giedion, up coming Americans like Buckminster Fuller, as well as lesser documented figures like Jacqueline Tyrwhitt and Stamo Papadaki. Throught its pages architecture was presented side by side with semantics, abstract painting, and surrealist poetry.
